Free Gardening Workshop July 12!

Neighbors: Join us at Macomb Park this Monday evening (July 12, from 6-7:30 pm) for a “native wildlife garden workshop” and hands-on installation led by the District Departments of the Environment/Parks and Recreation.

We need at least 15 neighbors — so please show your support!

Why come? Because you’ll:

the new garden will go in this space, by the entrance. need we say more?

  • help to beautify a neglected but very visible part of the park .
  • learn about different types of DC native plants, the importance of pollinators, and how to incorporate a wildlife garden into your own yard.
  • receive a Backyard Habitat kit, including pollinator-friendly plants, bird houses and other goodies.

The event is sponsored by the District Department of the Environment and the Department of Parks and Recreation.

Kids are welcome!

A Hot Day of Volunteering

Spirit of giving: More than 20 volunteers from Restoration Church spent several hours weeding, raking and otherwise beautifying Macomb Park in the 100-degree heat of July 7. The church is based in Atlanta and has recently opened in D.C. as well. Learn more at www.restorationchurchdc.com.

Thanks to these volunteers from Restoration Church!

The Restoration … Is Complete!

The long-awaited restoration of the Macomb Park gazebo began on March 15, 2010, and will conclude in mid-April, weather permitting. (Update, 4/9: the work finished ahead of schedule — check it out!) A team headed by Pete Ganginis, who built the gazebo in 1998, is performing the work under the guidance of Cleveland Park architect Dickson Carroll, who designed it.

Writes Dickson,

“It makes me so happy to see  spring renewal appearing in bright colors on the Macomb Park Gazebo!  … Thanks to Pete for doing a great job refurbishing his handiwork. I have been over several times and worked with Pete on selecting colors. We think it was last painted about eight years ago.”

Special thanks to the D.C. Department of Recreation for generously endowing this vital work.

A top-down restoration, March 19, 2010.

The Sweet Smell of Woodchips …

photo-12

...a particularly nice blend that shouldn't float downhill or splinter...

… and oil-based paint!

If you haven’t jumped off a swing or slid down a slide lately, it’s great time to pop by Macomb Park. After three long, grueling years on the previous woodchips, we got a beautiful, plush new carpet of them this past weekend. Special thanks to DPR interim director Dr. Ximena Hartsock and DPR Ward 3 manager Vince Cain for making this happen — and to Bill Patton of Turf Center Lawns for delivering and installing the chips.

As for paint, neighborhood volunteers and dedicated DPR staff teamed up on Sunday to restore a bunch of park features, including the lovely but sun-battered wooden train that faces the street.

It’s primed, painted and ready to roll again. All aboard!

Okay, it's not Acela. But we love it anyway.
